Abstract:

Typescripts of two of Offord's novels, Murder on Russian Hill (published by Macrae-Smith Company, 1938) and Clues to Burn (published by Duell, Sloan and Pearce, 1942). Murder on Russian Hill is bound and contains corrections and additions in the author's hand, including the original title, "A Little Game of Murder;" in pencil on the title page: "Has been published but parts on S.F. [i.e. San Francisco] were left out." Clues to Burn is unbound and contains corrections in the author's hand, publisher's marks (related to fonts and formatting), and publisher's mock-up of the title page in pencil. Collection also includes publisher's galley proofs of Clues To Burn, also corrected in the author's hand, and a mock-up of the cover design. Both novels feature series characters Coco and Bill Hastings.

Lenore Glen Offord (October 24, 1905-April 24, 1991) was an American mystery author and book reviewer. She was born in Spokane, Washington and attended Mills College in Oakland, California. She wrote nine novels between 1938 and 1959 and worked as a mystery reviewer for the San Francisco Chronicle for over 30 years. She was married to Harold R. Offord and was a longtime resident of Berkeley, California.
